2023: The Year of Brilliance & Innovation

The fall semester of the 2023-2024 is coming to a close, and it has been a year of hard work and breakthroughs in a variety of areas for the students and faculty of SCUPI.
The SCUPI new building has now largely met the conditions for use and is getting into move-in phase. The completion of teaching and research facilities and public laboratories in the new building will provide enhanced support for course instruction, research activities, and faculty work.
Enrollment in 2023 also made a major breakthrough. In 2023, SCUPI has expanded its enrollment plan to include students from Tianjin, admitting a total of 300 students across 15 provinces and municipalities nationwide. SCUPI narrowed down its admission gap with SCU in 12 provinces and municipalities within 5 points, among which cities the admission score in Chongqing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu was higher than that of SCU. In May 2023, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China approved an increase in undergraduate enrollment from 300 to 375 students per year. Among them, 80 major in Industrial Engineering, 80 in Mechanical Engineering, 45 in Materials Science and Engineering, 85 in Computer Science, 85 in Electrical and Computer Engineering. SCUPI is now operating with over 1,000 students.
In terms of overseas studies, the students of Class 2023 reached a further education rate of 84%. Among the 170 graduates, 105 students received nearly 300 offers from prestigious universities around the world, including Stanford University, ETH Zurich, UC Berkeley, Yale University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Duke University, and other well-renowned engineering schools. 97.14% of the students who chose to further study abroad were enrolled by top 100 universities around the world. In addition, 38 students went to Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology of China, Zhejiang University, Tongji University, Sichuan University, Xi’an Jiaotong University and other domestic universities to further their studies.

On March 9th, to integrate the new faculty members into SCUPI teaching activities, T.Z. Mai, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, organized a training session on teaching skills for SCUPI new faculty members.
On March 24th, 70 SCUPI students with professors from IE and ME visited Volvo Chengdu Brand Center and had an amazing car manufacturing experience.

May
On May 5th, 50 SCUPI students visited Jingdong headquarters in Southwest China. This field trip allowed students to experience the working vibe of a leading Internet company up close, gain insights into the responsibilities and career prospects of each post, and get valuable references and insights for their future career planning.
June
On June 13th, SCUPI and West China Hospital of Sichuan University (WCH) held a symposium on the prospect of medical-industrial combination in medical simulation and innovation. This symposium marks a new stage of cooperation in the field of medical-industrial combination for the goal of building a highland of world-class simulation-based medical education, research, innovation and translation .
July-August
From July 12th to August 5th, SCUPI hosted the Summer Camp jointly designed by the SCUPI and the University of Pittsburgh. 118 students from Sichuan University joined the program.
From July 24th to August 11th, SCUPI hosted 2023 Hanyang University ERICA Summer Camp in South Korea. 27 students from Sichuan University participated in the program.

On September 11th, Dr. Mingking Chyu, Dean of SCUPI, an expert in energy and power engineering, and a Life Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers was awarded the 2023 “Tianfu Friendship Award”. This award is designed to honor foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to Sichuan.

On November 7th, 2023, Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) signed collaboration agreement with Airbus China to jointly cultivate talents with competencies and skills required by the future aviation industry. In the future, both parties will establish a joint aviation talent training base and formulate specialized internship programs. This collaboration aims to facilitate the docking of Airbus with university recruitment and employment platforms, fostering the connection between the two. While attracting high-quality graduates, this initiative also seeks to contribute to the development of talent in the Chinese civil aviation sector.
On November 17th, 60 SCUPI undergraduates went to JD Logistics Asia No.1 Chengdu Intelligent Industrial Park to carry out study activities. This activity is a useful practice for students to go out of the classroom and into the factory, thus, combining theory and practice organically; at the same time, it also provides guidance for students in learning and career planning.

On December 7th, Ms. Jingyu Bao, representative of Yibin Kaiyi Automobile Co., Ltd. and Mr. Wei Chai, representative of Sensetime Technology Co., Ltd. visited SCUPI, and Dr. Kang Li, SCUPI Associate Dean for Research, participated in the discussion. The three parties had a discussion on joint research, university-enterprise cooperation, and other cooperative issues, and also had an in-depth discussion on the cooperation intentions reached in the early stage.
In December 2023, Dr. Yumei Li and her team completed their provincial educational reform project “Integrated Academic Support Services for Language Learning in an EMI Setting”. This project was first supported by Sichuan University and recognized as “university-level excellent project” in the final evaluation. Later, it was recommended by the University and received support from the Education Department of Sichuan Province.
On December 16th, the CA group of SCUPI meticulously organized the Shanghai Alumni Association event. Utilizing the platform of the alumni association, graduates of the classes of 2019 to 2023 gathered together, marking the first offline reunion for many alumni after graduation. Dean Chyu and SCUPI staff attended the alumni gathering in Shanghai.
On December 29th, the carefully planned 2023 Glowing Fair event by SCUPI Student Council (SSC) came to a successful end! With a dazzling array of booths and outstanding performances, braving the cold wind, warmth was delivered to everyone’s hearts. Now, let’s revisit the splendid moments of the Glowing Fair together!
At the end of the year 2023, the first paper edition of the SCUPI Alumni Journal was launched. Using paper as a medium, we hope to build a bridge linking alumni and SCUPI.
January 2024
On the afternoon of January 9th, in order to strengthen and deepen the integration of industry, academia, and research and build a new pattern of close cooperation between the university and industry, the delegation led by Dr. Minking Chyu, Dean of Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI),along with relevant department heads and professor representatives, went to FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch for on-site visits and investigations.
