On October 16, 2023, with the aim of sparking interest in scientific research among SCUPIANS, fostering a deeper understanding of college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship projects, and nurturing a vibrant academic environment, the Career Advising Group (CA) and the Technology and Science Association (TSA) of Sichuan University – Pittsburg Institute collaborated to organize a lecture. They invited Dr. Yang Liu, an associate professor of SCUPI, with a bachelor’s degree in Automation and master’s degree in Control Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University, as well as a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky. Additionally, they welcomed Mr. Wenrui Liu, an outstanding student of SCUPI, to provide a clear and comprehensive explanation of undergraduate scientific research, share their successful experiences, and address any queries students might have during their scientific research journeys.
Before the lecture commenced, Ms. Roland Luo from the Career Advising Group (CA) provided a brief introduction to Associate Professor Yang Liu and senior student Wenrui Liu, leading into the day’s topic, “What’s Scientific Research?”
To kick things off, Wenrui Liu shared his personal scientific research journey over the past two years, recounting the challenges he encountered and the valuable lessons he gained within his research group. He emphasized that during the scientific research process, one frequently faces difficulties and uncertainties regarding research outcomes. This led him to present the eight essential qualities that undergraduates require when engaging in innovative projects. Subsequently, Wenrui Liu discussed techniques for literature searches, encouraging lower-grade students to enroll in the “Information Retrieval and Utilization” course offered by the library to learn about literature search methods. He then delved into explanations on how to use WOS (Web of Science) and CNKI for literature searches and concluded with an introduction to a method for exploring literature in new fields.
Following Wenrui Liu’s presentation, Associate Professor Yang Liu shared his personal experiences and insights as an educator regarding undergraduates’ participation in scientific research. He began by summarizing the motivations behind undergraduates’ involvement in scientific research and stressed the importance of aligning this experience with their individual career planning. He then discussed the different requirements for scientific research experience depending on whether students intend to study abroad or seek employment, supported by specific examples from students’ cases. Additionally, he categorized the personality types suited for scientific research and introduced five avenues for SCUPI students to engage in scientific research activities.
During the Q&A session at the conclusion of the lecture, students actively participated, and the guests patiently addressed their inquiries. Throughout the lecture, the two speakers conveyed their scientific research experiences and insights using vivid and engaging language, accompanied by numerous illustrative examples, which resonated deeply with the audience. This sharing session not only enriched the students’ knowledge but also provided theoretical guidance and methodological insights for their future scientific research activities, thereby assisting them in charting their own path in the world of scientific research.
At the end of lecture, Ms. Roland Luo also introduced upcoming events scheduled for October. She encouraged students to actively participate in the series of lectures and sharing sessions organized by the Career Advising Group (CA). She emphasized that alongside their studies, it is crucial to continuously broaden horizons, explore diverse fields, and enhance personal qualities. With this, the lecture concluded successfully.
