Event Recap: 2023 Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute Matriculation Ceremony Successfully Held

On September 15, 2023, the 2023 Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) matriculation ceremony for the Class of 2027 was held at the International Conference Hall of the Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction at Sichuan University.
The ceremony was attended by Vice President of Sichuan University, Director of SCUPI, Dr. Bin Liang; Director of Student Affairs Department of Sichuan University, Dr. Xiaohu Liu; Director of Academic Affairs Department of Sichuan University, Dr. Yuewu Dang; Director of Admissions Office of Sichuan University, Dr. Lei Zhang; leadership and faculty representatives of SCUPI; student representative from senior classes, as well as 300 freshmen from the Class of 2027. The ceremony was presided over by the student counselor of the Class of 2027, Ms. Fannie Yang.
Vice President of Sichuan University Dr. Liang Bin welcomed the arrival of the freshmen. He mentioned that Sichuan University has a long history and excellent academic environment, providing a platform for students’ growth. In recent years, SCUPI has developed rapidly, optimizing the teaching level and improving the quality of students, cultivating a group of high-quality talents for society. Dr. Bin Liang expressed his hope that the students will embrace the diversity of the world with an inclusive attitude, seize every opportunity and challenge with enthusiasm to embark on a journey towards the world.
The Dean of SCUPI, Dr. Minking Chyu extended a warm welcome and sincere congratulations to the Class of 2027, expressing good wishes for their upcoming learning journey. Dean Chyu stated that university is a place for students to discover themselves, understand who they are, and choose what kind of person they want to become. He encouraged the students to continuously explore themselves, enlighten their wisdom, understand their interests, talents, and endowments, cultivate innovative, independent, and diversified thinking, and proceed firmly and confidently.
Dr. Sanjeev Shroff, the Dean of the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh welcomed the Class of 2027 through a video message. Although he couldn’t be present at the ceremony in person, he emphasized that he always pays attention to the development of the Institute and the growth of the SCUPI students. He pointed out that SCUPI combines the excellent faculty and teaching environment of Sichuan University and the University of Pittsburgh, cultivating SCUPI students’ outstanding comprehensive qualities, academic abilities, and international perspectives. The Institute has gained high recognition from renowned universities both domestically and internationally. He hoped that the incoming freshmen would continue to strive for excellence and make great progress during their time here.
Representing the outstanding graduates of SCUPI, the first honorary alumni mentor, and the graduate of the Class of 2020, Xinyu Wu, shared his experiences of learning at SCUPI with the new students. He encouraged them to improve their information gathering and management skills, exercise their logical thinking ability, broaden their horizons, and face challenges with courage throughout their pursuit of goals. He advised them to grow through mistakes, embrace the process of summarizing and reflect, and make the best use of their time by balancing their study and personal life. He urged them to create their own brilliant future through hard work and perseverance.
Following that, three students who achieved the Best Academic Achievement Award were recognized and awarded trophies by Dr. Yuewu Dang, the Director of the Academic Affairs Department of Sichuan University. The Best Academic Achievement Award aims to commend students with outstanding academic performance in each grade, encouraging them to study diligently, engage in scientific research, innovate, and strive for academic achievements.
Xuanle Li, a representative of the award recipients from the Class of 2026, delivered a speech. He encouraged the new students to face mistakes directly and consider both success and failure as stepping stones in their personal growth. He emphasized the importance of efficient time management, rational planning of study and life, and actively pursuing progress and personal development through hard work and determination.
As the representative of the freshmen, Zijian Xiao expressed his longing for the university campus and expectations for future life. He encouraged everyone to adapt to university life, be courageous in trying new things, improve their abilities, and discover their interests through exploration. Lastly, he hoped that during their four-year university life, they would set sail together with their classmates and pursue their dreams.
Nine student representatives from the Class of 2027 solemnly read the SCUPI Honor Code on behalf of all the freshmen, firmly upholding the integrity code of conduct.
Finally, group photos were taken to capture this momentous occasion. With the successful completion of the matriculation ceremony, students embarked on a new journey.
