To enhance the employability of students and help them master job-hunting skills, on April 14, Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute invited Yi Ling, Lynn, the Head of the Campus Recruiting of Nio, to conduct a career planning guidance lecture. The lecture answered the whole process of how to develop a job-hunting route for oneself in terms of understanding the market and mastering interview skills.
At the beginning of the lecture, Lynn shared her experience from EF Education to ByteDance and then to Nio, and talked about experiences and thoughts she gained. Before making detailed personal career plans, we need to clarify the goals first, “should I enter the job market or continue my education? Do I want to study abroad? Is overseas experience helpful to me? What should I prepare for job interviews? How can I improve my pass rate? Do I need an internship? When should I start an internship?” After clarifying the questions and goals, we can think further.
Before job hunting, it is important to understand the current employment environment. Lynn visually demonstrated the characteristics of the current employment environment through several sets of data. After that, Lynn talked about the multi-dimensional traits that interviewees need to have from the logic of corporate recruitment and used the iceberg model as an example for the students. Lynn emphasized that in the interview, the business interviewer focused on explicit factors, leadership, and professional abilities, while the HR interviewer focused on the underlying factors and general abilities.
In the job search process, the interview is important. Lynn did the detailed sharing from the interview process to the performance and other aspects. The interviewer will focus on if the applicant’s ability and problem-solving ideas match the position. A qualified candidate needs to have compatible professional abilities as well as outstanding general abilities, such as communication and stress resilience. Students should understand the detailed requirements of the position before the interview, and then analyze their strengths and weaknesses. They can use the SWOT model as a tool in the analysis of their strengths and weaknesses.
Then Lynn shared some specific interview tips:
1. The content of the introduction must be simple and clear, and your core strengths shall be shared with the interviewer in a short time;
2. When answering questions related to one’s experience, it is recommended to express it clearly through the STAR law structure;
3. In the process of answering questions, questions need to be more combined with career development and job information, and collecting more background information can help you make a two-way choice afterward;
4. After the interview, it is recommended that students take the initiative to contact the HR that they communicated with before after waiting for a sufficient period and to review in time for self-feedback, as well as to learn more and refer to the experience of others.
Through this workshop, students knew the importance of planning, further understood the current job market, and learned a lot of basic interview skills. May the students gain from this workshop and take advantage of their strengths to proactively develop their job search plan in the future.
The Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute will continue to promote career planning guidance, invite industry experts and alumni representatives to share with our undergraduate students, and provide students with seminars, workshops and one-on-one consultation on self-awareness, career decision-making, job search skills, and career exploration to facilitate SCUPIANS to become successful professionals!
