On April 21st, the SCUPI CA team invited Wu Xinyu (Murphy), an outstanding alumni of the class of 2020, to hold a sharing session. As the first alumni invited to the Institute, Murphy shared with the students the challenges and solutions from his experience, from undergraduate to master’s, from internship to current work. Professor TZ Mai, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, was invited to make an opening speech. Students from all classes actively participated in the sharing session, and the atmosphere was dynamic.

Before the presentation, Dean Mai awarded Murphy with an Honorary Alumni Mentor and spoke highly of his accomplishments. Murphy graduated from the class of 2020 from SCUPI as a Mechanical Engineering major, and then he graduated from New York University with a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering. Murphy has a rich and outstanding experience in undergraduate study and practicum. At SCUPI, he served as the president of the Institute’s Student Council, was awarded the excellent teaching assistant twice, and acted as the professional host in many activities. He won a scholarship during his postgraduate study. Murphy interned in a market consulting company and a brokerage research firm, and now works in Chengdu Intel Industrial Engineering Department. In addition, Dean Mai also encouraged the students to step out of their comfort zone, find a suitable growth path, and fulfill their life goals.
in Sharing Session
Murphy shared his experience using the keyword “Dare to Try, Eliminate Confusion.” “Eliminate Confusion” means getting out of your comfort zone, being clear about your goals, and planning them without blindly making decisions. Murphy also took this opportunity to recall the situation he once faced with choosing clubs, oversea study, internships, and employment, so that the students could put themselves in Murphy’s shoes to think about how they would make choices in facing those challenges.
Murphy mentioned in the sharing session:
① Eliminating cognitive ambiguity includes recognizing your purpose, clarifying what you want, and formulating a targeted path. For example, when choosing an internship, when and what kind of internship is most suitable for your plan.
② The elimination of emotional ambiguity is to face up to personal emotions with a positive attitude to solve the problem. For example, in facing academic learning challenges and fears, you should face up to your emotions and give positive hints, to dismantle negative emotions and relieve anxiety.
③ To eliminate the ambiguity of action, starting from the actual action will put your “want” into the implementation. For example, after clarifying the career path, you should actively apply for work and learn career experience from seniors.
Lively Discussion Among Students
At the end of the session, Murphy had a lively discussion with the audience. Students also asked Murphy for advice on their challenges to eliminate their “ambiguity”.
We hope students can gain something from this session. Shortly, the CA team will invite more alumni worldwide to be back to SCUPI.
