Dear SCUPI Instructors,
Our first teaching seminar in 2022 Spring term led by Dr. Robin Cunningham will be held next Friday:
Date: April 1, Friday
Time: 12:40pm – 1:40pm
Place: Room 204, Zone 4, Liberal Arts Building
Topic: Inquiry-Based Learning—What is it and why do we care?
Introduction: Inquiry-based learning (IBL) can be a useful active learning tool not only in lab-oriented courses but in lower-level undergraduate courses as well. After a very brief overview of IBL, we will present two examples. The first will be an inquiry-based introduction to the derivative (Calculus I) which will give participants the opportunity to experience IBL and consider its value. Second, we will discuss the rapid development of computer coding skills through a fully inquiry-based set of case studies that I used at my previous institution. Could a similar approach be useful for developing students’ MATLAB skills at SCUPI? We will conclude with a discussion of the costs and benefits of an inquiry-based approach in the classroom.
You are all encouraged to attend!
