Sichuan University- Pittsburgh Institute Successfully Wraps Up the 2023 Freshman Orientation Week

In September 2023, Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute organized a series of activities called “Orientation Week” to help new students better adapt to college life and establish positive learning goals. These activities included class meetings, student organization recruitment, English workshop, the first lecture for freshmen, campus tour, and more. These events provided new students with a comprehensive understanding of university studies and campus life.

Part 1: Class Meeting

On the morning of September 10, 2023, at 7 p.m., the Class of 2027 gathered in Room C307 of the ZongC Building for the freshman class meeting. The meeting was hosted by the student counselors for the Class of 2027, Ms. Yang Fan and Ms. Zhang Xiao. They warmly welcomed the students and provided detailed introductions and explanations about the university’s basic information, academic guidance, growth guidelines, and regulations. The students also pledged to uphold academic integrity.

Part 2: Campus Tour

To familiarize the new students with the campus environment, on September 10 in the afternoon at 3 p.m., Peer Advisors from SCUPI organized a “Campus Tour” in small groups. Accompanied by their senior peers, the new students gained insights into the teaching and living facilities of the university.

Part 3: Student Organization Recruitment

Student organizations play an essential role in campus life. To enrich the students’ campus experience and enhance their overall skills and practical abilities, the Student Council, CYL, and Class Council of SCUPI held recruitment activities on September 10.

Part 4: English Workshop

To help new students adapt to the English learning environment and ignite their interest in learning English, on the afternoon of September 12, English faculties from SCUPI conducted an English Workshop. They shared their experiences and techniques for learning the English. Professor Yumei Li provided an overview of the SCUPI English writing courses, sharing insights from her own experience in learning English writing. Professor David Jeffrey introduced ENG 152 and ENG 200, outlining their curriculum requirements, and sharing personal experiences related to English learning. Mr. Mo Xu from the Office of Study Abroad presented the ENG 140 curriculum and offered guidance on international English language proficiency exams.

Part 5: The First Lecture for Freshmen

On September 13, 2023, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Prof. TZ Mai, delivered an inspiring inaugural lecture titled “Learning at SCUPI” to the freshmen. In his speech, Prof. Mai extended a warm welcome to all new students, briefly outlined the Institute’s development history, educational philosophy, and distinctive features, and provided valuable academic expectations. He encouraged students to make full use of the Institute’s resources, communicate with teachers, ask questions, enrich themselves, and maintain academic integrity while shaping their worldviews, philosophies on life, and values.

On September 22, 2023, the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in SCUPI, Dr. Ye Li, delivered a lecture titled “Becoming Young Adults with Cultural Attachment and an International Perspective.” Starting with the functions of universities, Dr. Li guided students to have a comprehensive understanding of college life. He hoped that students would become outstanding individuals with innovation, practical abilities, and an international insight.

Part 6: Academic Affairs, Career Advising, and Study Abroad Series

On the afternoon of September 13, 2023, the Academic Affairs team, Career Advising team, Office of Overseas Abroad, and IT Department jointly conducted training sessions for freshmen. They provided detailed information on curriculums in SCUPI, the use of academic systems, future career planning, and an overview of studying abroad.

Part 7: Peer Advising Ice-Breaking Activity

On the afternoon of September 16, sophomore students who served as “Peer Advisors” organized an Ice-Breaking Activity for freshmen. The “Peer Advising Program” is a unique student support initiative at SCUPI designed to provide assistance from senior students to freshmen, helping them overcome challenges in their academic and personal lives. During this event, sophomore students addressed common questions from freshmen, designed interactive games, and helped everyone become better acquainted with one another, fostering a harmonious student community.

With the successful completion of these activities, the 2023 Freshman Orientation Week at SCUPI came to a satisfactory conclusion. We wish the new students a fulfilling journey in SCUPI, filled with personal growth and readiness to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
