On September 6, 2024, Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) held its 2024 Fall Semester Teacher Orientation at Classroom N-211, Jiang’an South Campus, marking the official start of the new academic year’s teaching seminars. The orientation was hosted by Professor TsunZee Mai, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and attended by more than 20 participants, including newly appointed faculty and experienced senior instructors.

During the seminar, Dean Mai led an in-depth discussion with faculty members on topics such as teacher responsibilities, classroom management, and implementing student-centered teaching. He emphasized that students should remain the focus of the teaching process. While following the course syllabus, teachers should also regularly assess students’ understanding of the course materials. Based on their progress, teaching plans and methods should be adjusted to ensure effective learning outcomes and maintain high course quality.

The orientation was lively, with new faculty actively asking questions. In response, Dean Mai and senior instructors stressed the importance of sharing experience among colleagues and positive interaction with students. Dean Mai also gave a detailed demonstration on key aspects of creating course syllabi and lecture notes, helping the new faculty better understand how to structure teaching content to enhance student comprehension.

This orientation laid a solid foundation for the upcoming semester’s teaching activities. It helped new faculty align with SCUPI’s educational philosophy and acquire practical skills in course design and classroom management. The session concluded successfully with warm applause.

Throughout the semester, SCUPI will continue to host various teaching seminars, further improving the institute’s teaching standards through faculty development and ensuring the delivery of high-quality education.
