On November 11, 2023, the Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) and School of Cyber Science and Engineering cohosted The National University of Singapore (NUS) Industrial Systems Engineering & Management (ISEM) “3+1+1” Programme Seminar at the 919 Lecture Hall, Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation Building, Jiang ’an Campus. This seminar was conducted via online and offline approaches.

The “3+1+1” Programme is established by SCUPI under the joint educational framework collaborated by NUS, National University of Singapore Suzhou Research Institute (NUSRI), and Sichuan University. Under the framework, admitted students are required to complete the first three years of undergraduate study at SCUPI, then they will spend a bridging period at NUSRI during their fourth year, i.e. for the first “+1” year. This immersion prepares them both in the aspect of English writing and communication skill as well as specialized knowledge, before they can apply for M.Sc. Admission at NUS, i.e. for the second “+1” year. The bridging course modules at NUSRI include “Scientific Writing and Communication in English”, “Science, Technology & Entrepreneurship Seminars”, “Final Year Project”, and Major Courses.

First, Professor Nan Chen, Deputy Head (Graduate Programmes) of Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management at NUS introduced the basic information, admission requirements, study mode and living conditions of NUSRI to the students, then he demonstrated the advantages of the “3+1+1” programme through graduates’ employment and further studies data.

Furthermore, Professor Nan Chen introduced the details of the ISEM “3+1+1” Programme. He first explained the ISEM and listed the career paths of the graduates of the programme, then gave a detailed introduction of the tuition fees and living expense, specializations and elective courses, and final year project requirements, and finally provided information about the application process and precautions for the students.

At the end of seminar, Professor Nan Chen interacted with the students and answered their questions in detail. The seminar further enhanced students’ understanding of the NUS programme and guided them to make clearer plans for their future study abroad arrangements.
