SCUPI and FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch Deepened University-Industry Collaboration

On July 1, 2024, the engineer innovation practicum course jointly initiated by Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) and FAW-Volkswagen’s Chengdu Branch officially commenced.
Attending the opening ceremony were Quan Lu, Secretary of the Assembly Workshop of FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch, Manager Haitao Wang and Supervisor Qilong Xia of Human Resources, Senior Technician Nan Xiang, Supervisors Wei Lan and Qingyun Li, Instructors Feng Zhao and Dapeng Guo, Instructors Silong Luo and Xiong Luo of Industrial Engineering, and Rui Li, head of the Jardine Consulting Empowerment Center. As for SCUPI side, Associate Dean for Research Kang Li, Coordinator of Industrial Engineering Yang Liu, Coordinator of the Electrical and Computer Engineering, Professor Di Liu of Industrial Engineering, and Professor Ruiqi Dong and Qi Lu of Mechanical Engineering, as well as Director for Industrial Outreach Shuang Xue were present.
Secretary Lu presided over the opening ceremony. He warmly welcomed SCUPI faculty and students. Haitao Wang, Manager of Human Resources shared information about the company’s business and overall situation.
Associate Dean Li expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the institute for the trust and support from FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch, highly praising the hard work of both teams which provided invaluable learning and exchange opportunities for the students.
Since the beginning of the year, the two sides have engaged in a series of fruitful interactions. From field visits to in-depth discussions, culminating in FAW-Volkswagen engineers participating in the senior design expo, each step has demonstrated both parties’ firm commitment to deepening cooperation and co-cultivating talent. Particularly noteworthy is the engineer innovation practicum course launched during this year’s International Week, which not only integrated corporate resources but also allowed students through internships and practical training to gain firsthand experience in industry frontiers, stimulate their innovative potential, and enhance their problem-solving abilities.
Forty-nine students from the Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs of the 2021 and 2022 class formally embarked on their practical journey. This is not just an expansion of academic knowledge but also a refinement of practical skills. Associate Dean Li encouraged the students to seize this rare opportunity, be bold in exploration, integrate theoretical knowledge with practical operations, and pave the way for their future careers.
At the same time, Associate Dean Li and the SCUPI faculty conferred certificates of appointment as enterprise career mentors to the engineers of FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch.
This collaborative effort is the result of the joint efforts and shared pursuit of educational innovation by both sides. Together, they will cultivate high-caliber talents that meet market and industrial demands, infusing new vitality into China’s manufacturing sector. As the collaboration deepens, more outstanding students will thrive on this fertile ground, contributing their own strength to technological progress in China and around the world.
