The inaugural phase of the 2024-2025 Alumni Mentorship Program at Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) concluded successfully in June 2025. Over the course of one year, the program brought together 14 outstanding alumni who have excelled in academic research and various industries to provide one-on-one mentorship to sophomores and juniors undergraduates. The initiative offered students valuable opportunities to gain broader perspectives and better plan for their future careers.

Following the program announcement, SCUPI received an enthusiastic response from both alumni across different graduating classes and current students from various majors and grade levels. The Institute carefully assessed applicants through a comprehensive, multi-dimensional evaluation process, considering alumni professional qualifications and student academic performance, overall competency, and program fit. A mutual agreement selection process was implemented to ensure optimal matching between mentors and mentees.

A kick-off ceremony was held to mark the official start of the program. This year’s alumni mentors, graduates from the Class of 2019 to 2023, have distinguished themselves in their respective fields after graduating from renowned domestic and international universities. Their expertise spans robotics and automation, artificial intelligence and deep learning, engineering system optimization, and interdisciplinary studies. They currently hold key positions in cutting-edge industries such as advanced manufacturing and automation, fintech and risk management, and sustainable energy and business development.

During the program, SCUPI organized a series of online sharing sessions where mentors discussed their career trajectories and industry insights, while also offering professional advice on academic planning and career preparation. Interactive sessions enabled students to actively engage with mentors on practical topics including graduate school applications and career positioning, fostering lively and productive discussions.

Mentors also provided tailored one-on-one guidance through both online and offline channels, addressing key areas such as academic advancement, internship and employment choices, industry trends, and cross-cultural adaptation. They offered substantive advice and resource support to their mentees, creating a mutually beneficial learning experience for both sides.

Students embraced these opportunities proactively, moving beyond their peer networks to explore professional development paths under their mentors’ guidance. With recommendations and support from their mentors, several students successfully secured summer research opportunities and corporate internships, taking important steps toward clarifying and advancing their personal career goals.
