On Friday afternoon, March 18th, 2016, Mentoring/Advising System Kick-off Meeting was held at SCUPI. Minking Chyu, the Dean of Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI), Michael Reed, the Associate Dean for Academics, all faculty, staff, and 2015 freshmen attended the meeting.
Students were initially grouped according to their majors. Each group was led by one faculty mentor and one administrator. Mentoring/Advising System aims to provide suggestions in terms of majors, courses, academic planning, research projects, internships, time management skills, leadership development and so on. Traditional advising is more academic-oriented. However, Mentoring/Advising System at SCUPI provides more individualized guidance through one-on-one consultation and group activities. Along with interaction between mentor/advisor and mentee/students, peer advising is also encouraged to share academic interests, career goals, social events etc.
Questions about this system were proposed and discussed by all faculty, staff and representatives of students. Later on, students met with faculty mentors in groups. Each semester various events would be held regularly, including group discussion, buffet, cultural touring and others.
Mentoring/Advising System is enrichment-oriented. We believe that it will not only enrich students’ college experience but also enable them to be on the right track of becoming an international talent.
