On November 24, 2023, Dr. Jingshan Li, Director of the Department of Industrial Engineering, Vice Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering, and Gavriel Salvendy Endowed Professor at Tsinghua University, delivered a lecture at Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI). The lecture, titled “Smart Interconnection and Sustainable Development in Manufacturing and Medical Systems: Opportunities, Challenges, and Case Studies” was presented.

The lecture was hosted by Associate Professor Yang Liu from SCUPI, who holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Tsinghua University and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky.

Associate Professor Liu Yang introduced the speaker, Professor Jingshan Li, who is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of IISE, the founding chair of the IEEE Sustainable Production Automation Technical Committee, and the chair of the IEEE Healthcare Management Automation Technical Committee.

Dr. Jingshan Li began his presentation by discussing the establishment of the first-level discipline of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University. He provided insights into the current situations and trends in the development of Industrial Engineering both domestically and internationally. Dr. Li elucidated the goals, theoretical foundations, and application domains of the Industrial Engineering.

During the lecture, Dr. Jingshan Li primarily focused on two directions: intelligent manufacturing and smart healthcare.

In the realm of intelligent manufacturing, Dr. Li outlined the evolution from Industry 1.0 to Industry 4.0, summarizing the development characteristics and future trends of industrial systems. Using the specific example of a battery production system, Dr. Li illustrated how Industry 4.0 aims to transform and upgrade manufacturing through the integration of traditional industrial production with information technology, achieved through digitization, networking, and intelligence.

In the field of smart healthcare, Dr. Jingshan Li discussed the development process from Medicine 1.0 to Medicine 4.0. He systematically explained the smart healthcare system empowered by algorithms and data models under the backdrop of Medicine 4.0. Dr. Li summarized the elements, key points, and opportunities of Medicine 4.0. Using the example of readmission of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), he illustrated the specific application of smart healthcare systems in medical services.

In conclusion, Dr. Jingshan Li highlighted the opportunities and challenges faced by the research institute in studying smart interconnection and sustainable development in manufacturing and healthcare systems. He presented two case studies and outlined strategies needed to address challenges and seize opportunities in this evolving field.

Faculty and students enthusiastically asked questions and engaged in discussions.

Following the conclusion of the lecture, faculty and students actively engaged in posing questions. Dr. Jingshan Li responded to each inquiry, providing insightful guidance and advice. His presentation left a lasting impression on the attendees, enriching the academic perspectives of students and deepening their understanding of the relevant fields. With that, the lecture concluded successfully.
