From 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on November 21st, the Panda Youth Volunteer Association of Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) visited Baijiachang Community to conduct a volunteer activity titled “The Beauty of Nature: Pressed Flower Art Handmade Workshop.” As another remarkable chapter in SCUPI’s community volunteer series, this event focused on the art of pressed flowers. Through engaging explanations, knowledge sharing, and on-site creative crafting, participants experienced the charm of natural aesthetics in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

The aesthetic journey of conversing with nature began with light-hearted interactions. Volunteers started by showcasing pressed flower artworks and posing interesting questions to the community residents, such as, “How were these pieces made?” and “Which flowers and plants are most suitable for pressing?” Participants actively shared their thoughts, quickly warming up the atmosphere and laying a solid foundation for the subsequent knowledge session.

The host used a PowerPoint presentation to guide everyone into the world of pressed flower art. The explanations covered the basic principles of pressed flowers, techniques for selecting materials, methods for pressing fresh flowers, principles of composition and layout, as well as steps for pasting and framing. Additionally, a variety of outstanding pressed flower works were displayed, allowing everyone to visually appreciate the diverse expressions and aesthetic appeal of this art form. As the session progressed, the charm of blending nature and handmade artistry gradually blossomed in everyone’s hearts.

Under the guidance of the volunteers, participants began creating with the pre-prepared materials. Some crafted thematic collages with flowers, some carefully arranged leaves to create layers, while others attempted to make bookmarks or small framed paintings. The volunteers assisted in adjusting compositions and controlling the amount of adhesive used, fostering a focused and warm creative atmosphere.

After completing their works, participants took turns showcasing their creations and sharing their inspirations. The gentle-colored pressed flower pieces, whether minimalist or vibrant, were filled with the essence of nature and creativity. Everyone admired each other’s work and exchanged tips and ideas, creating a warm and lively ambiance.

At the end of the event, the volunteers prepared small souvenirs for each participant and took group photos to commemorate the occasion. Many residents expressed that this activity not only allowed them to acquire a new handmade skill but also helped them find small moments of happiness in the beauty of nature.

This pressed flower experience combined knowledge sharing with creative crafting, allowing community residents to gain new experiences and insights through the interplay of nature and art. In the future, SCUPI will continue to collaborate with Baijiachang Community to organize more diverse, enriching, and engaging activities, making community cultural life more varied, warm, and vibrant.
