To strengthen the mental health support system on campus and support the healthy development of students in Sino-foreign cooperative education programs, we successfully held the Session 4 of the Student Leadership Enhancement Program: Lecture on the University Students’ Mental Health and Peer Support on May 22nd, 2026, in Classroom B203, No.1 Teaching Building, Jiang’an Campus.
The lecture was given by Dr. Yingmei Wang, Director of the Mental Health Education Center of Sichuan University. The event was attended by Associate Dean for Student Affairs Ye Li, as well as student counselors Fan Yang and Yuchen Yang from the student affairs office.
Focusing on the physical and mental development characteristics of university students, Director Wang explained how to identify common mental health issues and provided key guidance on accessing mental health resources effectively, making students help themselves while better supporting others.
Part 1 Opening Remarks
Before the lecture, Associate Dean Ye Li noted that students in our institute face multiple challenges, including cross-cultural adaptation, learning in English, and international competition. Physical and mental health is the foundation of growth and the confidence to go global.

He emphasized that the institute fully implements the “Health First” educational philosophy and attaches great importance to mental health education. He urged student leaders to cherish the opportunity, think proactively, apply what they learn, care for their own mental well-being, take a leading role, support peers, and foster a warm, supportive campus atmosphere.
Part 2 Keynote Lecture
Director Wang tailored her professional presentation to the needs of Sino-foreign cooperative education students, covering cognitive guidance, resource utilization, and responsibility practice.

She stressed that mental health was essential for growth and success. Students should face emotional issues openly, free from stigma, manage stress proactively, and accept themselves with a positive mindset. She encouraged students to make full use of diversified mental health services at Sichuan University, including one-on-one counseling, AI mental support, and psychological outpatient services at the university hospital, to obtain professional support for physical and mental health.
She offered adjustment strategies at three levels:
Individual level: Maintain regular routines, adjust cognition, and avoid internal mental friction.
Campus level: Communicate proactively, utilize campus resources, and adapt to campus life.
Social level: Critically evaluate online information and uphold positive values.
She also clarified that student leaders should act as mental health observers, knowledge disseminators, and distress supporters, uphold confidentiality, and fulfill peer-support roles.
Using mental health big data, she explained the normality of emotions and detailed how to identify common mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. It guided students to accept emotional fluctuations, relieve stress through exercise and hobbies, learn scientific self-regulation and help-seeking, and improve crisis identification and peer intervention skills.
If your classmates experience a psychological crisis, you can first offer companionship and emotional support. If you are in emergency situations, you should promptly call the hotlines: National Youth Service Hotline (12356), Sichuan University Sunshine Hotline (85401212). The lecture concluded successfully amid warm applause from the students.
