On November 20th, 2024, “Deans’ Open Forum Session 2” hosted by Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) took place in the multi-functional interactive space N111 at the Jiang’an South Campus of Sichuan University. The event was attended by Dean Minking Chyu, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs TsunZee Mai, Associate Dean for Research James Lee, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Ye Li, Director of Administration Wei Tang, as well as staff representatives from various departments. The forum was moderated by student counselor Fan Yang.
Dean Minking Chyu addressed questions related to campus infrastructure and the international study environment. Regarding the construction progress of student dormitories, pedestrian bridge, and the dining hall on the Jiang’an South Campus, he noted that efforts are underway to expedite the dormitory construction and that the dining hall has already begun constructing. He also provided updates on the progress of pedestrian bridge. On international study trends, Dean Chyu observed that the shifting global landscape has led some graduates to pursue further studies domestically, resulting in greater challenges for postgraduate admissions in China. However, this has eased competition for overseas studies. He encouraged students to explore diverse study-abroad plans to increase their chances of admission to prestigious international universities.
Associate Dean TsunZee Mai addressed questions related to teaching consistency, alignment between assignments and exams, and exam frequency. Using illustrative examples, he explained how SCUPI ensures uniform standards for textbooks and core content while respecting academic freedom, allowing professors to adopt their teaching styles. He encouraged students to focus on mastering foundational knowledge, fostering innovative mindsets, and challenging themselves to stay at the forefront of their fields.
Associate Dean James Lee discussed academic research opportunities for undergraduates, emphasizing the importance of balancing coursework and research. He introduced the Honors Undergraduate Research (HUR) program for first-year students, designed to support their development in academic research. He encouraged students to identify their research interests, engage with professors in related fields, and turn their passion into productive academic pursuits.
Assistant Dean Ye Li addressed concerns about campus life. He assured students that their feedback on campus issues has been relayed to the relevant departments, with significant attention from Sichuan University. He highlighted that the ongoing development of the South Campus will help reduce commuting time for students. He also emphasized the importance of adhering to university policies to ensure a safe and fulfilling campus experience.
During the interactive part, students proposed suggestions regarding course offerings, event supervision, and the utilization of spaces. These discussions fostered a deeper exchange of ideas between students and leaders, further promoting the development of the institute and supporting students’ growth.
Deans’ Open Forum Session 2 at SCUPI enhanced communication between leadership and students. Moving forward, the institute will continue to uphold its principles of openness, inclusivity, and innovation, striving to optimize educational resources, improve teaching services, and prioritize students’ success. The aim is to build a model cooperative institute with distinctive educational characteristics, a vibrant academic culture, and demonstrable educational outcomes.
