Ling Yuewei, a student of 2023 class from the Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI), majoring in Industrial Engineering (IE), was admitted to a Ph.D. program in Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University with full scholarships and a Ph.D. program in Operations Research at Hong Kong Polytechnic University with full scholarships in March 2023. Both Stanford University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University are world-renowned higher education institutions, especially Stanford University ranking third in the United States according to the 2023 U.S. News & World Report ranking system.
During her undergraduate studies, Ling achieved excellent academic performance and rich research fruits. In her freshman year, she diligently studied subject-related knowledge and ranked among the top of her major with excellent grades. In her sophomore year, she actively participated in research projects with professors both inside and outside the Institute. In her junior year, she went to Polytechnique Montréal in Canada for a three-month research internship through an overseas research program. In the summer of 2022, Ling remotely participated in the summer camp at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and was awarded an invitation from a doctoral supervisor with an outstanding resume.
Regarding her admission to the Ph.D. program from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Ling said that she was already very satisfied. Professor Liu Yang from SCUPI encouraged her to apply for American programs and shared his experience and training opportunities for graduate students both domestically and internationally, research resources, and life experience. “The encouragement from my teachers is the main reason why I applied later, and this decision cannot be made without their support,” Ling said.
Ling successfully received the admission to the Ph.D. program from Stanford University around March. Ling’s story is highly inspirational for most undergraduate students. As a student, she fully enjoyed the fun of learning and research, achieved near-perfect grades due to good habits, and reaped the benefits of actively and confidently exploring various fields of study, resulting in a series of successes. Behind each success is her stable emotions and a bold personality that faces problems directly. We wish Ling Yuewei continued success and surprises in the vast field of research while staying grounded.
