To foster stronger connections between current students and distinguished alumni and to highlight the power of alumni role models, the Career Advising Group of Sichuan University – Pittsburgh Institute invited Zhu Chaolun (Harry), an outstanding graduate from the Class of 2019, back to campus on November 29, 2023. He shared his academic journey and insights on transitioning from university to the workplace with his fellow students. The lecture drew a full house and was met with a lively, engaged atmosphere.

Zhu Chaolun Shares His Journey

Zhu Chaolun was admitted to the Industrial Engineering major at the Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute in 2015. He was among the first cohort of students to take part in the 3+1+1 joint degree program between Sichuan University and Waseda University in Japan. In 2018, he went to Waseda University to complete his undergraduate studies, graduating in 2019. He then continued his postgraduate education at Waseda’s Autonomous Driving Laboratory. After earning his master’s degree, he worked as an algorithm engineer at Mainline Technology, followed by a role as a senior algorithm engineer for Robotaxi at Baidu. He currently serves as a senior algorithm engineer at the Autonomous Driving Center of XPeng Motors.

Before the session began, Administrative Director Vivi Tang presented Zhu Chaolun with an alumni gift and briefly introduced his background, highly commending his accomplishments.

The Sharing Session in Progress

During the session, Zhu Chaolun first talked about his life and studies during his time at the institute, sharing why he chose the joint training program at Waseda University and what his experience was like there.

Drawing on his own journey, he then gave students practical advice on key aspects of job hunting for algorithm positions during campus recruitment. He emphasized the importance of thorough information gathering and research, and offered a detailed, insightful breakdown of the skills recruiters look for and the areas candidates need to prepare for.

Finally, Zhu Chaolun shared three distinct workplace experiences from Trunk, Baidu, and XPeng Motors. He described how his mindset evolved and how his professional abilities grew over time, while also reminding students to strengthen their awareness of labor laws and improve their ability to manage workplace risks.

Michelle Xue Concludes the Session

At the end of the session, faculty Michelle Xue provided a summary of the session. Zhu Chaolun then engaged in an in-depth discussion with faculty and students on several topics, including how to make the best use of spare time to study computer science, the connection between what he learned in the IE major and his current career development, and long-term career planning. With that, the lecture came to a successful close.
